Canada's cost of living is much lower than most other western countries.

In large part this is because owning a home in Canada is cheap compared with typical Canadian incomes.

In addition to this, food and dining out are cheaper in Canada than most other western countries. Entertainment and recreation are also very affordable in Canada.

Energy in the form of petrol / gasoline and electricity are competitively priced compared with other countries, further lowering "cost of living Canada". Not only can you run your car cheaply in Canada, buying your car also likely to cost you less than you're accustomed to. Be prepared to pay much more for car / auto insurance in Canada than in the UK or Europe - Canadian insurance costs are more like the U.S. than Europe.

An extensive cost of living survey for overseas workers was carried out by Mercer in 2004.

Toronto has the highest cost of living in Canada, followed by Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary and Ottawa.

The survey found that Canadian cities have some of the lowest living costs in the developed world. The survey is reproduced below.
